I am a creative generalist and _______.

  • Copywriter

Or Copy Writer, depending on which writer you ask. This is the kind of the writing that works alongside art and design to produce memorable ads, marketing emails, social media posts, etc. Sometimes associated with Clios, though I’ve only ever been short-listed for one.

  • Editor

Dedicated editors and proofreaders are an endangered species in 2024, so editing work is often combined with editorial management. I’ve done both. I have also been a manager and mentor to developing writers in both professional and volunteer settings.

  • Content strategist

It doesn’t matter how well you write if you’re sending the wrong message. Content strategy is the work of defining the “why” and “how” behind a communications plan. And from there: audiences, segmentation, channels, timings, scope, tools, and methods of execution.

  • Technical writer

Also: Technology writer. I translate complex technical topics into documentation, web content, and other communications that meet people at their level of expertise. I’m equally capable of documenting API endpoints and delivering articles about developments in machine learning research.

  • Advocate

Any good writer who writes for utility should be thinking about how people seek out and interact with digital information. For me, that means approaching communication with a UX mindset and actively advocating for change that supports accessibility and inclusivity.

  • All-rounder

Some other things I can do at a basic or better level include: programming (Python, JavaScript), building websites (HTML, Sphinx, WordPress, GitHub), running A/B tests, creating design templates (Figma), editing image and video assets (Photoshop, Premiere, Snagit), automating workflows, and making art (watercolor painting, calligraphy).
